A Lab on the chart and in the DNA study

The Labrador retriever is the one breed where the two methods in this calculator share a subject. The size chart puts every dog from 51 to 100 lb in the large column, and an adult Lab (65 to 80 lb for males, 55 to 70 lb for females, according to the AKC standard) lands firmly there. The methylation formula (16 × ln(age) + 31) comes from a 2020 UC San Diego study that measured age-related DNA marks in blood samples from 104 Labradors and matched each dog to people with similar patterns.

So for a Lab you can read the DNA figure with more confidence than for other breeds. The study also checked its curve against Labrador life events: about 8 weeks in a puppy lined up with roughly 9 months in a baby, and the typical Lab life span of 12 years lined up with a human life expectancy of 70.

Reading your Lab’s result

Up to about 10 years, the DNA formula makes a Lab older than the chart does: at 2 years it says 42, the chart 24. Around 10 the two cross, and at 12 the chart gives 77 against the formula’s 71. By the DNA measure, a young Lab is further along than its playfulness suggests; the two methods disagree most in these early adult years.

With the AKC’s life expectancy of 11 to 13 years, the calculator marks a Lab’s senior years from about 8.3 to 9.8, a little later than the AVMA’s 8 to 9 for large breeds in general. It’s a useful moment to ask your vet how often your Lab should be checked from now on.
