Pomeranian Age Calculator: Dog Years to Human Years

A Pom can live 16 years: convert its age to human years on the small-dog chart and see a senior stage that starts later than in bigger breeds.

What this page sets up

The calculator opens with a 12-year-old Pomeranian on the small-dog column of the AKC chart, which covers every dog of 20 lb or less: 64 human years. The breed’s AKC weight of 3 to 7 lb is shown next to the size choice. Senior years come from the Pom’s AKC life expectancy of 12 to 16 years, so the page marks them from about 9 to 12. Put in your own Pom’s age; months count, so 7 years and 6 months is halfway between 44 and 48.

Small dogs age slowly after five

The small, medium and large columns of the chart all give 15 at one year, 24 at two and 36 at five: on this chart, small and large dogs mature at a similar pace. They part at 6. From then on the small column adds 4 human years per dog year, where the large one adds 5 or 6 and the giant one 7 or 8. That’s why a 12-year-old Pom is 64 while a 12-year-old Great Dane would be 93.

Two methods, one caveat

The DNA formula (16 × ln(age) + 31) was built from the blood of 104 Labrador retrievers. It treats every dog alike, and for a toy breed it reads older than the chart at almost every age: at 5 it says 57, the chart 36. Use the chart figure for a Pom, and the formula as a second opinion.

With a 16-year upper span, many Poms outlive the chart. The table below stops at 16, its last row; past that, the tool shows 80+. For how big a Pom puppy will get as an adult, the puppy weight calculator puts its weigh-in on the toy-breed growth curve.
