What this page sets up

The calculator opens with a 9-year-old German Shepherd on the large column of the AKC’s dog-years chart: 61 human years. The DNA formula shown next to it gives 66. Senior years are set from the breed’s AKC life expectancy of 12 to 14 years, so the page marks them from about 9 to 10.5. Enter your own dog’s age; if you know the birthday, add the months as well.

Large or medium: weigh your dog

The German Shepherd’s standard spans the boundary between two columns of the chart. Males, at 65 to 90 lb, are always large. Females run 50 to 70 lb, and a 50 lb female is, by the chart’s own bands, a medium dog (21 to 50 lb). The difference starts at 6 years and grows: at 9 it’s 61 on the large column against 56 on the medium one, at 12 it’s 77 against 69. Weigh your Shepherd as an adult, out of puppy coat, and pick the column that matches.

A later senior window than most large dogs

Large dogs as a group are often called senior at 8 to 9 (the AVMA’s figure). German Shepherds get a longer life expectancy from the AKC than many breeds their size, so the life-stage method used on breed pages, the last quarter of the expected span from the AAHA’s 2019 guidelines, puts their senior stage at 9 to 10.5. A 10-year-old GSD is 66 on the chart, and the table below continues to 16, the chart’s last row.

If you’re comparing with another big breed, the Golden Retriever page uses the same column with a shorter life span, which moves the senior years more than a year earlier.
