A small dog with a long life
The AKC standard asks for a Chihuahua weighing no more than 6 pounds, and the AKC gives the breed a life expectancy of 14 to 16 years, longer than the 10 to 13 years it lists for Labradors, Golden Retrievers and French Bulldogs. On the size chart they go in the small column (up to 20 lb), the line that climbs most slowly after the first two years.
That slow line is the point. Up to age 5 every size except giant reads the same: 15 human years at one, 24 at two, 36 at five. After that the small column adds about 4 human years each year while large and giant dogs add 5 to 8, so a 12-year-old Chihuahua is about 64 in human years, where a 12-year-old Great Dane would be 93.
Senior years for a Chihuahua
A long-lived breed reaches its senior years later, because they are counted as the final quarter of the expected life span. With 14 to 16 years, this page marks them from about 10.5 to 12. It is a planning guide for check-ups, not a verdict on your dog: ask your vet what care suits your Chihuahua in its later years.
The DNA formula for toy breeds
The formula next to the chart was fitted on Labrador retrievers only, a breed more than ten times heavier and a few years shorter-lived than a Chihuahua. Treat its number as a point of comparison for a toy dog, not as the better answer.
