The hearts on this page
- Heart of stars: a solid heart filled with
*, seven rows tall. It is the classic for Valentine’s messages. - Heart outline: a hollow heart drawn with dots and slashes, lighter on the page.
- Small heart:
( \/ )on four short lines, the safest choice for phones. - Heart of hashes: a smaller filled heart built from
#, which looks bolder. - Two hearts: a pair of small hearts side by side, for couples and anniversaries.
- Love letter: an envelope with
<3inside.
Filled hearts or outlines?
Filled hearts, with the same character on every row, are the sturdier choice: even if an app narrows the spaces a little, the shape still reads as a heart. The outline heart depends on the gaps inside it, so it is the one to keep for places that show text in a fixed-width font, like a code editor or a plain-text email. The small heart sits between the two, with so few spaces that it rarely breaks.
Adding words
For “I love you” or a name in big letters to go with the heart, open the big letters generator, pick a font and copy it just above or below the heart. For hearts to sprinkle through a sentence, see the heart symbols.
