Fitting a full name on one line
Virginia’s English Standards of Learning (2024) ask kindergartners to “accurately print first and last names, beginning each with a capital letter”. A first name alone fits almost anywhere, but adding the last name often doubles the length. This page opens on a landscape page at Medium (¾ inch from the top line to the baseline), which fits most full names of up to about 15 letters and spaces. The table shows the biggest size that fits each example name without shrinking, measured with this generator in the Print handwriting on US Letter paper:
| Full name | Letters and spaces | Portrait | Landscape |
|---|---|---|---|
| Noah Kim | 8 | Large | Extra large |
| Mia Wilson | 10 | Medium | Extra large |
| Liam Johnson | 12 | Medium | Large |
| William Walker | 14 | Small | Medium |
| Olivia Martinez | 15 | Small | Medium |
| Muhammad Williams | 17 | Extra small | Small |
| Sebastian Anderson | 18 | Small | Medium |
| Alexander Rodriguez | 19 | Extra small | Small |
Length isn’t the whole story: m and w are nearly three times as wide as i and l, which is why the 17-letter Muhammad Williams needs a smaller size than the 18-letter Sebastian Anderson. A4 landscape is a little wider than US Letter, and there Olivia Martinez fits at Large.
Making a class set
Paste the class list with one full name per line and keep Name under Letter case, so every first and last name starts with a capital. Each child gets a page in one PDF. When a few names are longer than the rest, they are shrunk to fit and the others keep the size you picked; choosing the size that fits the longest name instead gives every page the same letter height.
For a child with a long surname, two lines (first name, then last name) give two pages and bigger letters on each. A name is never split across two lines: a long hyphenated or two-part surname is made smaller instead.
To practice a name in cursive, use the cursive name tracing worksheets. For a single short name at the biggest sizes, the name tracing generator opens in portrait at Large.
What this page sets up
| Letter case | Name (capital first letter) |
|---|---|
| Letter size | Medium: ¾ in / 19 mm (K, 1st) |
| Title | “Trace your first and last name” |
| Orientation | Landscape |
Anything else starts from the choices you last made on the name tracing worksheet generator in this browser. Settings you change here are remembered for next time, but this page's own setup, the names and the title are not, so it always opens the same way.
