Preschool name tracing starts big: this page opens with dotted capitals 1¼ inch tall, extra space between the letters, and a drawing box under the rows for a self-portrait. Type a name (or paste a whole class list) and print; every row is the same name, with a solid example on the first row and the dots fading a little each row after.

What’s on the page

  • A solid model row. The first row shows the name in full ink, so a child can see the finished shape before tracing it.
  • Dotted rows that fade. Each row is a little lighter than the one before, so the last rows give less help. Untick Fade each row to keep them all equally dark.
  • Wide letter spacing. The gap between letters keeps a small hand from running one letter into the next. It also makes each letter easier to point to and name.
  • No blank rows. Writing the name unaided usually comes after plenty of tracing, so this page leaves them out. Add one under Blank rows at end when your child is ready to try.
  • A drawing box captioned “Draw a picture of yourself” fills the bottom of the page. Change the caption to “Draw your family” or anything else, or turn it off.

Making tracing easier

Tape the page to the table so it doesn’t slide. Thick crayons and triangular pencils are easier to grip than thin pencils; dotted letters work with both. If the dots are hard to follow, switch Tracing style to Gray, which prints each letter as a solid pale stroke, or to Outline for hollow letters a child can color in. For a child who can’t yet hold a line, laminate the page or slip it into a sheet protector and use a dry-erase marker so it can be traced again and again.

Moving on

When the capitals are steady, switch Letter case to Name (a capital first, then lowercase) and the size to Large. The kindergarten page is set up for that next step, with smaller letters, a descender line and blank rows to write the name alone. For a first and last name on one line, use the first and last name page.
