Kindergarten name tracing moves from big capitals to the name as it’s written at school: a capital first, then lowercase, at ¾ inch on handwriting lines, with two empty rows at the end to write it alone. The page opens set up that way; type a name, or paste the class list for one page each.
How the page is laid out
| Row | What it is |
|---|---|
| 1 | Solid model of the name |
| 2 and on | Dotted letters, each row a little lighter |
| Last two | Lines only, to write the name unaided |
The guide lines are a top line, a dashed midline, a baseline and, because this page turns it on, a descender line below for tails. Tall letters (b, d, h, k, l, t) reach the top line, short ones (a, c, e, m…) stop at the midline, and tails (g, j, p, q, y) drop to the descender line. Pointing out these three heights while your child traces is most of a handwriting lesson.
Why mixed case
The Common Core kindergarten language standards include L.K.1.a, “Print many upper- and lowercase letters”, and L.K.2.a, “Capitalize the first word in a sentence and the pronoun I” (thecorestandards.org, as of October 2026). A name with one capital and the rest lowercase is the first place a child uses both kinds of letter on purpose. The Name setting capitalizes after a space or hyphen and after O’ and similar prefixes, so Anna-Lee and O’Brien come out right. For a capital inside a name, as in McKenzie or DeShawn, choose As typed and type it the way the family writes it.
Through the year
Start the year at Large if your class begins with bigger letters, and move to Medium (this page) and then Small as the letters get steadier. Switch Tracing style to Gray once the dots are easy, so the guide is still there but the hand does more of the work. When the blank rows come out well, try the first and last name page, or practice early reading words on the Dolch sight words page.
What this page sets up
| Letter case | Name (capital first letter) |
|---|---|
| Letter size | Medium: ¾ in / 19 mm (K, 1st) |
| Descender line | On |
| Blank rows at end | 2 |
Anything else starts from the choices you last made on the name tracing worksheet generator in this browser. Settings you change here are remembered for next time, but this page's own setup, the names and the title are not, so it always opens the same way.
