Kryterion’s camera rules are stricter than most
Pearson OnVUE asks for 640×480 at 10 fps and Proctorio for 320×240. Kryterion’s camera requirements for its online proctored (OLP) exams are closer to a hardware spec: a minimum video resolution of 720p at 30 fps, a high-speed USB 2.0 connection, a cord of at least 6 feet (2 m), a manual focus ring, and no auto zoom or autofocus, which must be turned off. Your test sponsor decides whether a laptop’s internal webcam is allowed or you need a freestanding one; for a freestanding camera, Kryterion suggests one with a heavy base and a flexible neck.
That’s why this page opens the camera at 720p and 30 fps instead of the usual 1080p: it asks for exactly Kryterion’s minimum and measures what arrives. A camera that delivers 1280×720 but only 20 fps fails the line, and so does one that falls back to 640×480.
Reading the checklist
- Resolution and frame rate: the measured values, not what the camera claims. A camera set to 30 fps measures a little under it, so 28.5 fps or more passes as about 30. Frame rate falls in low light, so if it’s short of 30, add light in front of you before blaming the camera. Try 1080p in the Resolution list too: a camera that reaches 30 fps there passes as well.
- Autofocus: where the browser reports the camera’s focus mode, the line says whether autofocus is on. Switch it off in the camera maker’s software, then stop and restart the camera here to read it again.
- Light and framing: Kryterion asks you to sit directly in front of an internal webcam and avoid strong backlight, which the Well lit line catches.
- System: Windows 10 or 11, or macOS 12 or later, with the latest Chrome or Firefox. Chromebooks only when your certification program supports them.
Before you launch the exam
Kryterion’s online testing requirements (updated August 2026 at the time of writing) recommend a personal rather than a work computer, because installing the secure browser may need administrator rights. Virtual machines aren’t allowed. External webcams must be USB, and you may need to close pop-up blockers, antivirus, Skype, Photo Booth or TeamViewer. The connection needs 1.0 Mbps each way, ping under 200 ms and jitter under 50 ms: run Kryterion’s system check before downloading the secure browser, then close this tab.
For the sound, use the microphone test. Other exam systems: the Pearson OnVUE check or the Proctorio check.
