What Honorlock needs from your camera
Honorlock runs as an extension in Google Chrome, so the camera it uses is the one Chrome uses, the same one this page opens. Its minimum system requirements (updated August 2026 at the time of writing) don’t set a resolution. They list Windows 10 or 11, macOS 13 or later or a Chromebook, Chrome 120 or later, 1.0 Mbps download and 2.5 Mbps upload. They also name two camera brands the extension is incompatible with: Amcrest and Nexigo. If yours is one of them, use the laptop’s built-in camera or borrow another webcam for the exam.
Open this page in Google Chrome first: Honorlock works through Chrome, so testing here in Chrome uses the same camera, the same system privacy settings and the same camera choice in Chrome. If the picture works, what’s left is Honorlock’s own permission and the extension, which Honorlock’s system check covers.
Fixing a camera Chrome can’t find
Honorlock shows a Not Found error when Chrome can’t identify your camera. Its steps for Windows: open the Camera app to confirm the camera works at all, go to chrome://settings/content/camera and choose the right camera, allow apps to access the camera in Windows privacy settings, and install any waiting Windows updates. If this page shows a black picture while the camera light is on, look for a privacy shutter or a camera key on the keyboard.
The room scan
Honorlock’s room scan starts with a countdown, then you show your entire area: under your work area, around the room and behind where your device is. On a laptop that means tilting and turning the whole computer; an external webcam on a long cable is easier. Practice once with the preview above so you know how fast you can move before the picture blurs. Your exam’s guidelines may also ask you to show your phone being switched off and your scratch paper. A phone can help here: Honorlock lets it upload your ID, complete the workspace scan and serve as a side-angle camera when the exam turns that on, but not take the exam.
When the list is green, run Honorlock’s system check, then close this tab and start the exam from Chrome. For audio, use the microphone test; for other services see the Proctorio check or the Respondus check.
