Towns and cities inside a circle

Draw a circle to list the towns and cities inside it.

Towns and cities with at least 5,000 people (and regional capitals) from GeoNames (CC BY 4.0), counted when their centre point is inside the circle. Populations are GeoNames' figure for the town itself, not its metro area, and the list leaves out smaller villages, so it isn't a count of everyone who lives in the circle.

How to list the towns within a radius

This page opens with a 50-mile circle and the Towns and cities inside a circle panel already open. Search your own town or type coordinates in the box above the map, set the radius you need (25, 50, 100 miles, or kilometres from the unit menu), and the list under the map fills in: every town and city of 5,000 people or more whose centre lies inside the circle, sorted from nearest to farthest.

Each line gives the place, its state, province or region with the country code, the straight-line distance from the centre of your circle, and its population. The summary above the table counts the places and names the largest one. When there are more than 500, the table shows the 500 nearest and the CSV file has them all.

    What people use it for

    • Job and house hunting: which towns are within a 30-mile commute of a new office, or within an hour of family.
    • Sales and service areas: the towns a technician, a store or a franchise covers, as a list to paste into an ad campaign or a territory plan.
    • Events and deliveries: which towns to mention on a flyer for a 20-mile delivery zone.

With several circles on the map, pick which one to list from the Circle menu.

    Reading the numbers carefully

The list comes from GeoNames (CC BY 4.0), an open gazetteer that draws on national statistics offices. Populations are for the town or city proper, as GeoNames records them, and some are a few years old. Small villages aren’t in the list, and a town straddling the edge of the circle is counted only if its centre point is inside, so treat it as a list of places rather than a population count. For exact counts of people, use the census data of your country for the area.
