How to list the postcodes in a radius
This page opens with a 10 km circle in Sydney and the Postcodes inside a circle panel open. Type a postcode (3000) or a town or suburb in the search box and press Enter to move the centre, or click the map. Type a radius above the map, or several (5, 10, 20) for rings around the same centre, and choose the circle to list from the Circle menu.
The table lists each postcode with the nearest town of 5,000 people or more (when there is one within 75 km) and the state or territory the postcode belongs to, and the straight-line distance from the centre. Download CSV saves the postcodes with their coordinates and distances; Copy list copies the codes separated by commas.
How a postcode counts as inside
Each postcode is represented by a point inside its ABS Postal Area, near the middle of the area. A postcode is listed when that point is inside the circle. In the cities, Postal Areas are a few square kilometres and the point stands in well for the whole postcode. In the outback a single postcode can cover tens of thousands of square kilometres, so near the edge of a circle a postcode can be partly inside without being listed; widen the radius a little to catch the fringe.
Postal Areas are the ABS’s approximation of postcodes for statistics, published every five years with the census, so a postcode created since 2021 may be missing. The list is part of this site, about 30 KB compressed, and loads only on this page. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
