Weighing in ounces
A Yorkie puppy gains a few ounces a week, which a bathroom scale can’t see. Use a kitchen or postal scale, put the puppy in a light bowl or box, and subtract its weight. Ounces become pounds by dividing by 16: 2 lb 6 oz is 2.375 lb. In kg, 1.08 kg is 1,080 g. Weigh at the same time of day, before a meal, for the cleanest numbers.
Reading the result against the 7 lb limit
The breed standard gives only a ceiling, so the chart below follows a puppy heading for three quarters of it, about 5.3 lb. The example, 2 lb at 12 weeks, points to 5.3 lb with a likely spread of 3.9 to 7.8 lb. The line under the result says whether your puppy’s estimate is within the 7 lb limit.
An estimate above 7 lb is common and only means your Yorkie will be bigger than the show standard allows. A very low estimate, under about 3 lb, is worth raising with your vet at the next checkup.
Coat changes as it grows
Yorkies are born black and tan, according to the standard, and the dark body coat clears to the adult blue and tan as they mature. The colour change doesn’t affect weight, but a long adult coat hides the body shape, so feel the ribs and waist rather than judging by eye. To track several weigh-ins over the coming months, switch to Track several; each point narrows the range.
For a grown Yorkie’s age in human years, which differs for small dogs, see the dog age calculator. The Chihuahua, another toy breed with a ceiling-only standard, has its own page at Chihuahua puppy weight.
