    Where these numbers come from

Format and weights are College Board's for the May 2027 exam. Where College Board gives no weight for each free-response question, every point in the section counts the same.

Entering an AP Human Geography practice exam

Count the multiple-choice questions you got right out of 60. Then score each free-response question from 0 to 7 with College Board’s scoring guidelines for it: every lettered part (A to G) is one point, so mark each part right or wrong rather than grading the answer as a whole.

The exam is fully digital in the Bluebook app, and College Board says about 30% to 40% of the multiple-choice questions refer to a stimulus such as a map, image or data table, so practise reading those under time: 60 questions in 60 minutes leaves a minute each. At least one free-response question asks you to analyze across geographic scales, from local to global.

    Where a HuG estimate moves

The sections weigh the same, but a free-response point is worth almost three multiple-choice answers. Take 45 multiple-choice answers and 4 points on each question: about 66%, three and a half points short of the 5 line (69.5%), and two more free-response points close the gap. If your practice FRQs keep losing the same kind of part, such as the “explain” parts that need a full cause-and-effect answer rather than a named example, working on that is often the quickest gain. Human Geography’s lines are close together, a 2 starting at 40 and a 3 at 49 on Fiveable’s chart, so near the bottom a few free-response parts can move the estimate by a whole score.
