Scoring your AP Lang essays
Each of the three essays is scored on College Board’s 6-point analytic rubric: one point for the thesis, up to four for evidence and commentary, and one for sophistication. Score your practice essays row by row against the rubric and the sample essays College Board publishes with each year’s questions, or ask your teacher to; an honest 4 is more useful here than a hopeful 5.
Then count the multiple-choice questions you answered correctly out of 45. The essays decide most of the score: 55% of the exam rides on 18 points, so moving one essay from a 3 to a 4 is worth about as much as three more correct multiple-choice answers.
Holistic 9s versus analytic 6s
The Language chart dates from 2007, when readers gave each essay one holistic score from 0 to 9. Today’s rubric awards six separate points for named skills, so a share of the essay points doesn’t mean quite what it meant then, and the 2007 multiple-choice section had 52 questions to today’s 45.
Read a Lang estimate as rough, especially between a 3 and a 4, where the 2007 lines sat only 18 composite points apart. The fastest way to move it is usually the evidence-and-commentary row, worth four of every essay’s six points. Taking Literature too? Its calculator uses the 2009 Literature chart.
