This page opens with the Lower voice preset tuned for a female-to-male change: pitch −5 semitones, formants −2.5. Record a sentence or upload a clip and it plays back straight away.
Lower notes and a longer throat
Typical adult female speech sits around 190 to 220 Hz and male speech around 100 to 130 Hz. Five semitones down lowers the pitch by about a quarter, taking a 200 Hz voice to about 150 Hz: a light male voice. The formants go down 2.5 semitones, about 13 percent, which is what a longer vocal tract does to the resonances.
Moving the formants less than the pitch is the difference between a man speaking and a recording played too slowly. A slowed-down recording lowers both by the same amount, and the result sounds muffled and oversized.
Tuning it
Open Fine-tune:
- For a deeper male voice, go to pitch −7 and formant −3.5.
- If it sounds boomy or “underwater”, raise the formant half a step.
- If it still sounds feminine, the pitch is fine but the formant is too high: lower it a little.
Delivery
Male speech in many languages uses a flatter intonation and a slightly slower pace. Keeping your pitch movement smaller than usual makes the result more convincing than any setting. Record close to the microphone in a quiet room: lowering a voice brings out room noise. For the reverse direction, see male to female.
