This page opens with a Demon voice built on the Monster preset: pitch −8 semitones, formants −5, 45% distortion, a 30 Hz ring modulator and a dark reverb. Record a line or upload a clip, and it plays back as something that shouldn’t be talking.
How the demon is built
- Pitch −8: eight semitones down puts even a deep voice well below the normal speaking range, around the bottom notes of a bass singer.
- Formants −5: the resonances drop by a quarter, which suggests a throat and chest far bigger than a person’s. Keeping them less shifted than the pitch keeps the words understandable.
- Distortion: the growl. Clipping the waveform adds rough overtones, like a voice straining.
- Ring modulation at 30 Hz: the signal is multiplied by a slow tone, which splits it into two slightly detuned copies. At 30 Hz you hear it as a trembling, unstable rumble rather than a metallic ring.
- Reverb: a medium dark room, so the voice seems to come from somewhere around you rather than out of a speaker.
Performance tips
Speak slowly and lower than your normal voice: the effect exaggerates what you give it. Breathy, drawn-out words and a slight rasp work well; laughing is especially effective. Whispering turns into a hiss, so give it a full voice. Keep the microphone a hand’s width from your mouth to avoid pops.
Variations
Under Fine-tune: raise Reverb to 50% for a cathedral, drop the Pitch to −10 for something enormous, or lower Distortion for a smoother, more menacing voice. Compare with Monster, Deep and Cave on the same recording by clicking them.
