What three minutes is good for

Three minutes is long enough to do something properly and short enough that nobody loses patience. It is a common length for:

  • A cup of tea: many black teas are steeped for three to five minutes; check what your packet says and start the timer when the water goes in.
  • Turns and games: a turn on the tablet, a round of charades, Pictionary or a word game, a turn in the “hot seat”.
  • Short speeches: a three-minute speaking slot in a class presentation, a debate rebuttal, a pitch or an elevator talk.
  • Warm-ups: a three-minute stretch, a round of jumping jacks, or the first exercise of a circuit.

How the page is set up

It opens at 3:00 with the Ring display, a ping at 30 seconds left and the Chime at zero. Press Start (or the space bar). The ring empties clockwise, the tab title shows the time left, and the time stays exact if you switch to another tab. When the chime sounds, press Stop alarm; the status line then counts any overtime, which helps when a speaker runs on.

Fair turns for kids

For children taking turns, three minutes is easy to explain: “when the ring is empty, it’s your sister’s turn.” Switch to the Pie display under Display and sound if a shrinking disc is easier for them to read, and tick Repeat so the next turn starts by itself. The visual timer page opens with the pie and a soft sound already set.

Tips

Press + to add a minute without stopping, and R to reset to 3:00. For brushing teeth, the 2 minute timer matches the usual advice; for a longer break, use the 5 minute timer.
