52 or 53 paydays
A weekly payroll usually has 52 paydays, but not always. Fifty-two weeks cover 364 days, so one weekday occurs 53 times in a year, two in a leap year, and a payroll on that weekday gets 53 paydays. Holidays can move one across the year line: New Year’s Day is always a federal holiday, so a payday that falls on it is paid on December 31. 2026 had 53 Friday paydays and 2028 has 52. Five-paycheck months
Most months have four paydays, and four or five months a year have five. For a Friday payroll in 2027 those are April, July, October and December. If you pay monthly bills from weekly pay, budget each month on four paychecks and treat the fifth as a buffer or savings, rather than spreading it across the months with four.
Who’s paid weekly
In the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ February 2023 survey, 27.0% of private establishments paid weekly, second only to biweekly pay. In construction it was 65.4%. Some states require weekly pay for some jobs: New York requires manual workers to be paid weekly, except at non-profits and at employers the state has authorized to pay less often, and according to the Department of Labor’s state table most Rhode Island employers must pay weekly. Massachusetts requires hourly employees to be paid weekly or every two weeks.
