Convert Images to WebP

Turn JPG, PNG and GIF files into smaller WebP images for your website, with transparency kept and a before/after view of every file.

This page opens with the output set to WebP at quality 80. Drop JPG, PNG, GIF or BMP files and each is converted in your browser; the list shows how much smaller every file got, and the compare view shows the picture before and after.

Why convert to WebP

WebP is an image format from Google made for the web. It compresses photos better than JPG and graphics better than PNG, and it supports transparency. For a website that means faster pages: images are usually most of a page’s weight. Google’s own study found WebP files 25 to 34 percent smaller than JPG at the same quality, and lossy WebP with transparency is often several times smaller than the PNG it replaces.

Quality 80 is a sensible default for the web. Drag the Quality slider up to 90 for product photos where detail sells, or down to 60–70 for thumbnails and backgrounds. WebP at a given number isn’t the same as JPG at that number, so judge with the compare view rather than by the value.

What converts well

  • Photos: typically a quarter to a third smaller than the same JPG.
  • PNG logos, icons and UI images with transparency: often much smaller, with the transparent edges kept.
  • Screenshots with lots of text: check the compare view at 100%. If letters look soft, a 256-colour PNG may be smaller and sharper; try the PNG page.
  • Animated GIFs become a still WebP of the first frame here.

Using the files

Upload the WebP files to your site or CMS as usual. WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace and Wix accept WebP uploads. For email newsletters and older software, keep a JPG or PNG copy. Metadata such as GPS location is removed during conversion unless you choose to keep EXIF.
