Compress an Image to 2 MB

Fit phone and camera photos under a 2 MB upload limit without resizing them, at the highest JPG quality that fits, all in your browser.

Choose images or drop them hereJPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF or BMP, one or many. Compressed on your device, never uploaded.

The maximum counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes and the minimum as 1,024, so the file passes sites that count either way.

This page opens with Target size at 2 MB, the output as JPG and no maximum width or height, so photos keep their original resolution unless they can’t fit. It’s for upload limits that are generous but still smaller than what a modern phone or camera saves: a detailed 12-megapixel phone photo can be several megabytes, and a 48-megapixel or DSLR photo far more.

The 2 MB upload limit

Plenty of sites refuse files over 2 MB because of a default rather than a choice. The PHP manual lists upload_max_filesize with a default of 2M, and post_max_size, the cap on the whole form, at 8M. A WordPress site on a host that kept those defaults shows a 2 MB maximum on its Add New Media screen, and the same limit hits plugins, forums and contact forms built on PHP. If it’s your own site, your host can raise both settings; if it’s someone else’s, compressing is the way through.

How much detail 2 MB keeps

Photo Pixels Bits per pixel at 2 MB
12 MP phone, 4032 × 3024 12.2 million 1.3
24 MP camera, 6000 × 4000 24 million 0.67
48 MP phone, 8064 × 6048 48.8 million 0.33

At 1.3 bits per pixel a 12-megapixel JPG is hard to tell from the original even zoomed in. A 24-megapixel file still fits at a good quality. For 48-megapixel shots the tool lowers the quality first, and if that isn’t enough it reduces the pixels in small steps; the row tells you when it did. To keep more quality at a smaller resolution on purpose, set a maximum size such as 4000 pixels.

Batches and privacy

Drop a whole set of photos and they’re compressed two at a time on your device, with Download all (ZIP) at the end. GPS position and camera serial numbers are stripped unless you ask to keep the EXIF data, which matters when you upload photos taken at home.
