What the Swiss QR code holds
The code follows SIX’s Swiss Implementation Guidelines for the QR-bill (version 2.3, and 2.4 from 14 November 2026): up to 997 characters on fixed lines, starting with SPC, version 0200 and coding 1. Then come the IBAN (Swiss or Liechtenstein only), the payee’s structured address, the amount and currency (CHF or EUR), the payer’s address, the reference type and reference, a free message, the end marker EPD, and optionally billing information for accounting software and up to two alternative payment procedures.
Checks the page runs
- IBAN: the ISO 13616 mod-97 check, and that it’s a CH or LI IBAN.
- QR-IBAN and QR reference: a QR-IBAN must come with a QR reference, whose last digit is a modulo 10 recursive check over the other 26.
- Creditor reference: the ISO 11649 RF check digits.
- Format: currency, amount format, the end marker, the reserved “ultimate creditor” block left empty, and the address type.
Before you pay
A QR-bill can be forged like any paper bill, and a scammer only needs to change the IBAN. If you weren’t expecting it, contact the company using details you already have, not the ones printed on the bill, and compare the IBAN with earlier bills from them.
