The British refill pad layout

A4 is 210 × 297 mm, the paper size schools and offices use in the UK and most of the world outside North America. Two of the best-known UK refill pads are ruled 8 mm apart: Pukka Pad describes its pads as “8mm feint ruled paper” with a “Margin & 4-hole punched for use alongside a binder”, and Oxford describes its Campus A4 refill pads as “8mm ruled with margin”. This page opens the generator with the same layout: A4 portrait, lines 8 mm apart, a margin line on the left and guides for four punch holes.

What you can change

• Line spacing. The ruling is set to Custom at 8 mm. Type 7 mm for denser notes or 9 to 10 mm for larger handwriting; anything from 2 to 60 mm works.
• Margin line. It starts 28 mm from the left edge, clear of the punch holes. Change the distance, or turn the margin off.
• Holes. Four guide circles, 80 mm apart and 12 mm in from the edge, for a 4-ring binder: the “8 x 8 x 8 cm” hole distance Leitz gives for its 4-hole punch. Switch to 2-hole for a two-ring binder, or to None.
• Header and labels. The first line, about 25 mm down, is drawn in the margin color as a header line. Tick Name and date labels for class work.
