Board width and length go under Boxes: the width and thickness set the nail spacing. Where areas meet: the length of the edges two areas share, which need no skirting.

Count the treads only: the top riser goes with the landing or floor above. Measure the tread front to back, nosing included, and the nosing as far as it sticks out past the riser.

Every strip runs the full length of the room, plus the extra for trimming at the walls. The calculator lays the strips in whichever direction needs the least carpet, without reusing offcuts.

Pile runs down the stairs and along the roll, so each step is cut with its tread and riser along the roll; narrow steps sit side by side across it.

Between each board’s end and its long side. 60° and 62.5° make a flatter V than 45°; compare the drawing with the maker’s photo.

Most herringbone boards come left- and right-handed (A and B); some laminate clicks both ways, so one board does for both.

Pergo: 10% for a straight lay. Diagonal starts at 15%, the figure vinyl plank makers give for diagonal.

Ordering laminate by the box

Laminate is what the flooring calculator opens with on this page. It is sold in boxes (cartons) that each cover a set area, printed on the label. Enter every room, hallway and closet you’re laying as an area, type the coverage per box, and you get a count of full boxes that already carries the waste.

That waste starts at 10%, the factor in Pergo’s project planner. Pergo’s own planner rounds up twice, once for the square feet and once for the cartons, and the calculator does the same: it never rounds down to a part box. If a room is small or full of corners, raise the allowance.

Several rooms, one order

The page starts with three areas, a 15 by 12 ft living room, a 10 × 11 ft bedroom and a 3 × 10 ft hallway, to show a whole-floor order: change them to your rooms, remove the ones you don’t need or add more. Adding the rooms before rounding matters: rounded room by room, these three would take 10 + 7 + 2 = 19 boxes of 20 sq ft, but together they need 18, because the part boxes are shared. The results table lists each area so you can check the measurements. Further down, a grid of seven room sizes against four box sizes shows how much the box size changes the order.

Price

A price can go in per box, per square foot or per m². It’s multiplied by everything you take home, the unused end of the last box included.
