Tuning a ukulele, string by string

Press Start tuner and allow the microphone. Hold the ukulele as you play it and pluck the top string, the G. The tuner shows G4 and how far off it is; turn the G peg until the needle sits in the green zone. Then the C, E and A strings. In Auto mode the tuner finds the nearest string by itself, so the order doesn’t matter, but going from G to A matches the string buttons.

New nylon strings stretch for days and keep going flat. Tune them up, play for a while, and tune again; this is normal and settles down after a few sessions.

Reading the result

The needle covers half a semitone either way. Tune up 15¢ means tighten the string a little; Tune down 2 semitones means the string is two frets too high, which happens if the wrong peg was turned. Each string button gets a dot: green when its last steady reading was within ±3 cents, amber within ±10 cents, red beyond that.

Other ukulele tunings

The tuning menu has Low G (G3 C4 E4 A4), D tuning (A4 D4 F♯4 B4, one whole step higher, common in early 20th-century Hawaiian music) and Baritone (D3 G3 B3 E4). To hear each note instead of reading a needle, the ukulele tuning tones page plays all four.
