Tuning to open D
Press Start tuner, allow the microphone and go through the four strings that move:
- 6th string down two semitones to D2.
- 3rd string down one semitone to F♯3: the smallest change, easy to overshoot, so loosen it slowly.
- 2nd string down two semitones to A3.
- 1st string down two semitones to D4.
The 5th (A2) and 4th (D3) strings stay as they are: check them too. While a string is far off, the hint counts semitones; within half a semitone the needle and the strobe band take over, and the string’s dot turns green inside ±3 cents.
Three Ds and two As
Open D has D on the 6th, 4th and 1st strings and A on the 5th and 2nd, octaves apart. Once the tuner shows them all green, strum: the chord should sound smooth and settled, with no slow beating between the octaves. If one string still wobbles against the others, it is usually the F♯ on the 3rd string; tap its button to lock the tuner to it and fine-tune.
