Three strings move from standard: the low E, the B and the high E each go down a whole step, and the tuner counts each one down for you.

Getting from standard to DADGAD

Press Start tuner and allow the microphone. The A, D and G strings need nothing; tune them as usual if they have drifted. Then the three that move:

  1. 6th string, E → D. Pluck it: the tuner shows D2 and Tune down 2 semitones. Loosen it until the needle settles in the green band.
  2. 2nd string, B → A. It reads A3 with two semitones to go; the A3 string is one octave above the open 5th string.
  3. 1st string, E → D. Down to D4, two octaves above the low D.

Then play all six open strings and check each one once more, since lowering three strings changes the pull on the neck.

Checking by octaves

DADGAD has three D strings (6th, 4th and 1st) and two A strings (5th and 2nd), so it is easy to check by ear: the D strings and the A strings should each ring together without a slow wobble. The tuner’s string buttons show the same thing with dots: green on all six means every string is within ±3 cents.

Locked strings help here

The 2nd string’s target (A3) is only a whole step above the 3rd string’s G3, so if both ring at once the reading can flip between them. Mute the other strings, or tap the A3 button to lock the tuner to that string; Auto goes back to following what you play. For other open tunings, see the open G tuner and the open D tuner.
