This page is set up for a weekly spelling list. It opens with a sample list practicing the long a sound in its common spellings (ai in rain and paint, ay in play and today, a with a silent e in cake and grape, and eigh in eight and weigh), hidden across and down in lowercase School print letters. Under Printing it is already set to two versions, two puzzles per page, so one sheet holds two different grids for neighboring students.
From list to worksheet in a minute
- Delete the sample words and paste your list, one word per line.
- Type a title, for example Unit 4 Spelling, or leave it empty.
- Type how many grids you need into the versions box, and keep 2 per page to save paper.
- Download the PDF: student pages first, teacher pages (the keys) at the back.
Make the puzzle practice spelling
The word list prints in the order you typed it, so you can keep the order of your spelling test, or group words by pattern as in the sample. Ask students to write each word on the line next to the puzzle after they find it, or to sort the found words by spelling pattern. Lowercase letters match the way the words appear in reading books; switch to UPPERCASE for older classes if you prefer.
Words that don’t fit
Long words need a big enough grid. With Grid size on Auto the grid grows to fit every word; if you set a size yourself, the page names any word that didn’t fit instead of quietly leaving it out. Words with digits or symbols can’t go in the grid, and are named too.
