Discord’s upload limits (October 2026)

Discord’s own help page, the File Attachments FAQ, gives these limits per file, checked on October 25, 2026:

  • No Nitro: 20 MB. Discord raised the free limit from 10 MB to 20 MB in August 2026, and says it now checks the limit the same way on desktop and mobile. On Android, where phone videos tend to be large, it warns you may hit the limit more often than before even though the number is higher.
  • Nitro Basic: 50 MB.
  • Nitro: up to 1 GB.

Discord adds that it is experimenting with file size limits and that some users may be able to upload larger files. This page starts at 20 MB, the limit every account has; the buttons under the size chips switch to the Nitro limits.

How to make a clip fit

  1. Drop the video on the box above, or tap it to pick one from your phone. Nothing is uploaded.
  2. Trim it to the part people need to see. Fewer seconds leave more bitrate for each one, which is the biggest quality win there is.
  3. Keep the target at 20 MB (or pick 50 MB for Nitro Basic) and press Compress video. The tool works out the bitrate the size allows, takes the audio’s share off the top, and with Resolution on Auto steps down from 1080p to 720p or lower when the bits would be spread too thin.
  4. Download the MP4 and drag it into the Discord chat.

Gameplay and screen recordings

Game footage at 60 fps with fast motion needs more bitrate than a talking head. If a long clip comes out blocky, try in this order: trim it, set Frame rate to 30 fps max, then Resolution to 720p. For music or voice that matters, leave audio on Auto; for a silent bug report, choose Remove audio and give every bit to the picture.

iPhone videos are often HEVC. Safari can decode them; in a browser that can’t, the tool says so and suggests what to do.

To share a still from the clip instead, extract a frame as a PNG; for just the sound, extract the audio. The image compressor shrinks screenshots for the same limits.

How much bitrate fits under Discord's limits

The bitrate a target leaves for picture and sound together, by clip length. The compressor spends this, minus the audio, on the video, and picks the resolution to match.
