Remove the Location From a Photo

Every photo you add is cleaned straight away: the GPS coordinates and all other metadata come out, and the cleaned copy is checked for location data.

JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, HEIC and AVIF are cleaned without touching the image data. TIFF and BMP files (and damaged files) are re-encoded with these settings.

What this page does

Phones and many cameras write the place a photo was taken into the file as GPS coordinates. Apple’s own personal safety guide puts it plainly: when photos with location metadata are shared, “the people you share them with may be able to access the location metadata and learn where it was taken.”

On this page, every photo you drop or pick is cleaned the moment it is added. You don’t need to press anything:

  1. The card shows what the original file said, including the coordinates and a map link if it had GPS, so you can see what would have been shared.
  2. The location and all other metadata are removed, and the cleaned copy is read back to confirm No GPS location in the cleaned file. JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, HEIC and AVIF photos keep their exact pixels; other formats the browser can open (e.g. TIFF or BMP) are redrawn and saved with the settings under Removal settings.
  3. Press Download to save the cleaned photo, and share that one instead of the original. The original on your device is not changed.

Removing the location on an iPhone instead

Apple’s Personal Safety User Guide (opened October 2026) describes three built-in ways:

  • When sharing: select the photos, open the share sheet, tap Options and turn off Location. “Location Not Included” then shows above the Options button.
  • For one photo in your library: open it, tap the More button, then Adjust Info, Adjust Location, No Location.
  • For future photos: Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Camera, then Never. The Camera can only add a location when it has access to Location Services.

This page is handy when the photo is already a file (sent to you, downloaded, from a camera or a computer), when you want the camera details gone too, or when you want to check the result rather than trust a switch.

Things to know

The picture itself can give a place away. Removing metadata doesn’t blur street signs, house numbers, landmarks or a view from a window. Look at the photo before you post it.

On a phone, the browser may already get a copy without the location. iPhone, iPad and Android photo pickers can leave the GPS out of the copy they hand to a web page, so a photo can show no location here and still have one in your library. The heads-up above the list says so on those devices; the Apple steps above, or a computer, deal with the original.

Videos aren’t covered. This tool reads and cleans still images only.

To look at a photo’s metadata without changing anything, use the EXIF viewer. To make the cleaned photo smaller for sending, run it through the image compressor; to check whether an image was made with AI, the AI image detector.
