Discord Mic Test

See whether a voice activity setting would send every word or chop your sentences, and find a sensitivity level that sits between your voice and the room.

A voice activity gate shows when a voice chat app set to -40 dBFS would send your voice.

Your browser will ask for permission. Audio is analyzed on your device and never uploaded.

How to use the voice activity gate

  1. Press Start microphone test, then choose the microphone Discord uses from the list.
  2. Talk normally for a few seconds, the way you would in a call, then stay quiet for a few seconds. The test learns your voice level and the background noise.
  3. Watch the Sending your voice light while you talk. It should turn on with your first word and stay on until you stop. The line on the RMS meter marks the activation level.
  4. Check Cut-outs: each one is a gap of under 0.6 seconds where the gate closed in the middle of your speech. A few at the ends of sentences are normal; several per sentence mean listeners hear you chopped up.
  5. Click Set between voice and noise to put the level halfway between the two, or drag the slider yourself.

The light should stay off while you’re quiet. If it flickers on from keyboard clicks, a fan or breathing, raise the level; if it drops out on soft words, lower it.

Reading the result

Sent is the share of your talking time the gate let through. Close to 100% means listeners hear every word; much lower means the level is set too high for your voice. The summary under the gate tells you which way to move it, and warns when your voice is too close to the background noise for any level to work.

Matching the settings in Discord

The three Browser processing boxes at the top are the browser’s own versions of the switches in Discord’s Voice & Video settings, and start on here. Do here what Discord’s guide suggests doing there, one switch at a time: untick one, talk, and watch the cut-outs and the noise floor change. Then make the same choice in Discord, and if you set Discord’s input sensitivity by hand, aim for the same gap you found here: above the room, below your quietest words.

How this page is set up

This is the same microphone test as the standard mic test, opened with different settings. You can change any of them once the test is running. Like the standard test, the page remembers only which microphone you picked.
