This page opens the calculator on SSI with Social Security’s own example: an individual who also gets a $300 Social Security benefit. In 2026, $20 of it isn’t counted, so countable income is $280 and the federal SSI payment is $994 − $280 = $714. In 2027 the benefit rises 3.6% to $310.80, paid as $310 because Social Security rounds the payment down to the dollar, and the maximum to $1,029, so SSI becomes $1,029 − $290 = $739 and the total goes from $1,014 to $1,049.
How to use it
- Choose an individual or an eligible couple (both spouses on SSI). For a couple, enter your Social Security benefits combined.
- Enter the Social Security benefit you get, if any, and wages from work before tax. Leave both at 0 if SSI is your only income: your payment is then the full federal maximum.
- Read the table: the maximum, your countable income, the federal SSI payment, and the total with Social Security.
How countable income works
Social Security doesn’t count the first $20 a month of most income. From wages it also leaves out the first $65 and half of the rest. What remains is countable income, and the federal payment is the maximum minus that. A Social Security benefit counts in full after the $20, so it reduces SSI dollar for dollar; wages reduce it by about half.
What this leaves out
State supplements, which some states add to the federal payment; in-kind support and maintenance (shelter someone else provides); a spouse’s income when only one of you gets SSI; and other exclusions such as student earnings. Your SSI notice has the exact figures.

An individual with wages
Wages don't change with the COLA, so the whole rise in the maximum reaches the SSI payment.
