How much more income fits?

The most you could add to the MAGI above (before the extra income you're testing) and still land in each bracket, with that bracket's yearly cost. Income in one year sets the premiums two years later.

Income dropped since then? Form SSA-44

IRMAA is based on income from two years earlier. If a life-changing event lowered your income since then, you can ask Social Security to use a more recent year with Form SSA-44. The events SSA lists: marriage, divorce or annulment, the death of a spouse, you or your spouse stopping or reducing work, losing income-producing property in a disaster or other event outside your control, a pension plan ending or being cut, and a settlement from an employer that closed, went bankrupt or reorganized. You need documents for the event and the lower income. If the income SSA used was simply wrong, or you filed an amended return, that is a different request (an appeal or a correction), not an SSA-44.

Nothing you enter leaves your device.

This page opens with the bracket table first: pick your filing status and enter the income from your 2025 return, and the calculator highlights your row. The default is a single filer with $150,000 of MAGI, which lands in tier 2. The full tables for every filing status follow below the explanation.

How to read an IRMAA table

Each row is one tier. MAGI is your adjusted gross income plus tax-exempt interest. The edges are exact: “$109,001 – $137,000” means $109,000 is still the row above. Part B a month is the whole premium you pay, the standard premium plus the surcharge; Part D IRMAA is added to whatever your drug plan charges, and you pay it whichever plan you choose. Surcharge a year is both surcharges times twelve, per person: on a joint return with both spouses on Medicare, double it.

Provisional until November

The 2027 figures here are the 2026 figures carried forward, because CMS hadn’t published 2027 amounts when this page was last checked. When it does, usually in November, the tables and the calculator switch to the official 2027 figures. Expect the standard premium and every tier’s premium to change, and the income edges to move, as they did from 2025 to 2026. A MAGI within a few thousand dollars of an edge is the case to recheck in November.

Which return, and what if it’s out of date

Social Security takes the MAGI from the return the IRS sends it, normally the one from two years before. A raise, a pension starting or a large sale shows up in your premiums two years later, for one year. If your income dropped since because of retirement, a spouse’s death, divorce or another event on SSA’s list, ask for a new decision with Form SSA-44.
