The example on this page

A single filer in Texas had a Marketplace plan from January to August 2026 and moved to an employer’s plan in September. Form 1095-A shows $420 a month in column A (premium), $480 in column B (benchmark) and $360 in column C (advance payments) for lines 21 to 28, and nothing after. Her income for the whole year was $36,000, 230% of the $15,650 poverty line, so the applicable figure is 0.0770. That makes line 8a $2,772 and line 8b $231 a month.

For each covered month the credit is $480 − $231 = $249, less than the $420 premium, so line 24 is 8 × $249 = $1,992. The Marketplace paid 8 × $360 = $2,880, so she repays $888 on line 27. September to December don’t count at all: no credit, no contribution.

How to fill the table

Type the first covered month’s three amounts, pick that month in Copy the amounts of and the last month with the same amounts in through, and press Copy. Then change any month that differs, such as a month after a move or a plan change. Leave months without coverage blank. If you had two Forms 1095-A for the same months, add their premiums and advance payments together; for the benchmark, take it from only one form when the policies are in the same state, and add the forms’ column B amounts when they are in different states.

Reading the result

The Part II table under the calculator shows lines 12 to 23 exactly as the form lays them out, columns (a) to (f), with the months you weren’t covered marked. Line 24 adds up column (e), line 25 column (f). Since 2026 there is no limit on repayment, so the whole difference on line 27 is due with the return; the “Why you owe” note shows the income at which the advance payments would have been right.
